Why You Need a Birth Plan in Preparation for Childbirth

Creating a birth plan can offer numerous benefits for expectant parents, and we couldn't have learned this the harder way than when we unexpectedly had our firstborn son, Jeremiah, via an emergency C-section.

As we geared up to welcome our second child, Kay, we figured we had to take control of our birthing experience, and it all boiled down to a comprehensive birth plan.

Below, we discuss the six reasons you should have a detailed birth plan as you prepare for your baby's birth.

Increased Understanding and Preparedness

Developing a birth plan has encouraged us to educate ourselves about the birthing process, various medical interventions, and pain management options.

Our preparation has led us to a better understanding of what to expect during labour and delivery, reducing our anxiety and boosting our confidence in our choice, which was a home birth after a C-section (HBAC).

As we crafted our birth plan, we also grew a deeper appreciation for Gabes' crucial role as a birth partner.

Improved Communication

A birth plan is a shared communication and decision-making tool between the expectant parents and their healthcare providers.

In our case, our birth plan allowed us to articulate, in detail, Anna's birth preferences and expectations, as well as our preparations for any unforeseen circumstances that may arise during her HBAC.

This document relieves pressure from expecting mums like Anna, especially during vulnerable moments when they can’t think or decide properly.

With all necessary information included in a birth plan, the guesswork is eliminated throughout the pregnancy, and during and after labour.

When Anna was in labour with Kay, she was able to focus on managing her pain and delivering our baby because our birthing team didn’t have to ask her questions. The team simply had to refer to our birth plan.

Effective communication between expectant parents and their birthing team is crucial in HBAC because it ensures that all parties are aware of the potential risks and necessary precautions.

Further, it has made us aware of all our options and any interventions that might be necessary and allowed us to make informed choices every step of the way.

Clear communication also fosters empathy among all parties. During Anna’s labour, everyone in the room knew best how to support Anna, letting her feel secure and confident amid the extreme pain she was feeling.

It helped reduce anxiety and stress, leading to the positive birth experience she had.

Most importantly, good communication facilitates the coordination of care among the birth team members.

Ultimately, our birth plan played a vital role in ensuring everyone was on the same page and could respond promptly to any changes in the condition of Anna or our baby.

Greater Sense of Control

Having a detailed birth plan gave us a sense of control over the birthing journey, which we lacked during our first baby's birth.

When we were crafting our birth plan, we were able to detail our preferred atmosphere, which involved dim lighting, quiet and intimate space, and everything that helps produce birth hormones like oxytocin.

In the process, we realised our desire wasn’t possible in a hospital setting, which is fast-paced, impersonal, and structural.

Ultimately, our birth plan opened the doors to the idea of a home birth, which perfectly meets our desire for an intimate and personal birth experience.

Further, Anna was able to specify her preferences for pain management–– natural, as much as possible.

During her labour at home, Anna was able to move around the house freely with the guidance of our birthing team, which aided in natural pain relief.

Overall, with our birth plan in place and a supportive birthing team, we were empowered to make informed decisions about Anna's care and feel more involved in the process–– from pregnancy to the postpartum period.

Enhanced Satisfaction

Women who create their own birth plans often report higher satisfaction with their birth experience.

With a detailed birth plan, Anna has felt more supported and understood by her birthing team.

We believe having a birth plan definitely led to a successful HBAC experience, with Anna feeling victorious and highly satisfied with our second birth outcomes.

Adaptability

Although a birth plan outlines preferences for labour, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period, it also encourages flexibility, especially for particular circumstances that could endanger the life of Anna or our baby.

Understanding that labour can be unpredictable, our birth plan helped us prepare for all eventualities with details of our desired approach if changes were necessary.

Positive Outcomes

Having a birthing plan definitely reduced our fear and anxiety about having an HBAC and all the unknown variables at play.

With a contingency plan for every possible scenario and knowing that we could quickly drive to the nearest hospital should complications arise, Anna had a more positive mental state while and after giving birth.

Some studies show that having a birth plan can lead to improved maternal and neonatal outcomes, such as lower rates of epidural anaesthesia and better neonatal health indicators like umbilical cord blood pH values.

The Bottomline

A birth plan isn't a guarantee that everything will go according to plan.

Rather, a birth plan is a valuable tool for communication, preparation, and empowerment as a couple gears up to welcome a newborn.

In our case, our detailed birth plan has helped us feel more in control and more supported throughout our pregnancy, labour, and delivery, leading to the positive and satisfying HBAC experience we just had.
