Why a Purpose-Driven Life is the Key to a Healthy Marriage

Without purpose, our marriage will go astray.

Proverbs 10:4 resonates strongly in our marriage, serving as a poignant metaphor for aimlessness.

In our eight years as a married couple, we've discovered idle hands and minds can pave the way to discord.

We find ourselves bickering a lot when either or both of us are sitting back with nothing to do. If we stare at each other's eyes for too long, we'll end up magnifying and nitpicking each other's flaws and imperfections.

The absence of a common goal or direction can breed discontent and lead to petty arguments, eventually building resentment toward each other.

We always need a mission to rally behind, whether pursuing career advancement, nurturing our spiritual life, or growing our family as God's family. Instead of focusing too much on each other, we can work on our collective goals and look forward to accomplishing them.

It's our shared spiritual journey and purpose in Christ that fosters unity in our marriage and minimises disagreements. It's what allows us to deepen our connection and cultivate marital resilience.

With a clear objective to pursue and a sense of direction, we are able to discover God's amazing plan in our lives and grow closer together.

The Bottomline

Love may lay the foundation of a lasting marriage, but purpose provides the scaffolding upon which it's built.

"Purpose" may sound like a lofty ideal for some couples. But for us, it's a practical tool for navigating the ebbs and flows of married life.

A purpose-driven life isn't merely about personal fulfilment. It's about intentionally nurturing a healthy and enduring partnership with God's purpose at the centre.

With God's spiritual guidance in our married life, we find joy and fulfilment in working towards something greater than ourselves.
