After kicking off our Southeast Asia adventure in Kuala Lumpur, we headed to our next destination–– Penang, which impressed us with its theme parks, lush gardens, hands-on museums, and beautiful beaches.

After exploring the island with Jere, our toddler, and Kay, our infant, we’ve rounded up the top 10 must-visit spots that young kids will love.

Each destination promises something special for kids and parents, with plenty of fun and educational experiences that make Penang an unforgettable family adventure.

Things We Did in Penang

Chew Jetty

Chew Jetty, a part of the Clan Jetties of Penang, offers a glimpse into the island's rich history and culture.

These traditional wooden houses on stilts are home to Chinese clans, preserving a way of life dating back to the 19th century.

You can stroll along the boardwalk, explore quaint shops, and enjoy local snacks while soaking in waterfront views.

The vibrant murals and occasional temple celebrations provide added charm, making it an engaging visit for kids and adults alike.

Chew Jetty is an excellent spot to learn about Penang’s heritage and capture unique photos.

Chew Jetty is located along Weld Quay in George Town, near the Penang Ferry Terminal.

Little India

Little India is a vibrant cultural hub, perfect for families seeking to introduce kids to Asian culture.

During our visit here, we ate at Bombay Kitchen and Bar, which is probably the best Indian restaurant we've been to by far.

Stroll through colourful streets filled with Bollywood music, savour authentic Indian dishes like biryani and gulab jamun, and shop for sarees, jewellery, and spices.

Kids will love the street performances and murals, while parents will enjoy the shopping and cultural immersion.

The lively atmosphere, especially during festivals like Deepavali, offers a sensory feast for all ages.

Pro Tip: Visit in the evening for cooler weather.

Little India is located in the heart of George Town, centred around Queen Street, Market Street, and Chulia Street.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm was a wonderful experience for our family, especially for Jere.

The park features over 15,000 free-flying butterflies from 60 species, along with other fascinating creatures, such as beetles, stick insects, lizards, frogs, spiders, scorpions, and koi fish.

Entopia is divided into two main areas: Natureland, an outdoor space with gardens, waterfalls, and ponds where butterflies roam freely; and Cocoon, an indoor air-conditioned discovery centre with interactive exhibits and educational activities.

Jere was mesmerised by the butterflies fluttering around us and loved learning about the different species through hands-on experiences, which truly sparked his curiosity about nature.

The park's flat walkways and moving walkways make it easy to navigate for all ages, including families with strollers.

With its mix of natural beauty, educational value, and interactive fun, Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm is a great place to spend a few hours exploring and learning together.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm, located in the picturesque coastal village of Teluk Bahang in northwest Penang, is only a 30-minute drive from George Town.

Penang Hill

Penang Hill was an exciting experience for our family, offering us breathtaking views of George Town from 821 m (2,693.57 ft) above sea level.

The funicular railway ride to the summit was a highlight, with Jere thrilled by the train going higher and higher through the lush greenery and tunnels along the way.

At the top, the cooler temperatures were a welcome relief.

We enjoyed exploring the nature trails, where we spotted dusky leaf monkeys, giant black squirrels, and colourful butterflies.

Jere was especially fascinated by the wildlife, giving him a fun learning experience.

We took a break at David Brown's Restaurant and Tea Terraces, a charming spot often described as a distant rumour of a long-forgotten garden.

The delicious meal and stunning views made the restaurant a perfect pause in our adventure.

With its perfect mix of adventure, nature, and relaxation, Penang Hill truly gave us an unforgettable day out in Penang.

Penang Hill, found in the lush Air Itam suburb just 9 km (5.59 mi) west of George Town, offers a cool, accessible retreat with panoramic views of Penang Island from its highest peak at Western Hill.

Batu Ferringhi Beach

Batu Ferringhi Beach is a vibrant coastal destination, ensuring a blend of relaxation and excitement for families with kids.

The long stretch of golden sand provides ample space for kids to play and build sandcastles, while the calm waters are ideal for swimming and splashing around.

You can enjoy a wide range of water sports activities, including jet skiing, parasailing, and banana boat rides, so there's something for everyone–– from thrill-seekers to those looking for milder adventures.

The surrounding area boasts numerous family-friendly resorts with excellent amenities, including kids' clubs, swimming pools, and organised activities to keep children entertained throughout their stay.

As the sun sets, the famous Batu Ferringhi Night Market comes alive.

This popular beach stretches along the northern coast of Penang Island, facing the Andaman Sea and offering a serene escape just 11 km (6.84 mi) northwest of George Town’s bustling centre.

Batu Ferringhi Night Market

Batu Ferringhi Night Market is a vibrant bazaar stretching along Jalan Batu Ferringhi, open daily from 7pm to 1am.

The market offers a wide array of goods, including clothing, souvenirs, local handicrafts, and imitation designer items, perfect for bargain hunting and souvenir shopping.

You'll love the lively atmosphere, colourful stalls, and the opportunity to try delicious local street food and snacks from various cuisines.

The market also features fun activities for children, such as henna tattoos, tuk-tuk rides, and even a small fun fair with rides and games.

Beyond shopping and eating, you can enjoy visiting nearby attractions, such as Tropical Spice Garden.

Batu Ferringhi Night Market stretches for about 1 km (0.62 mi) along Jalan Batu Ferringhi, a bustling street near the popular Batu Ferringhi Beach.

Adventure Zone at Shangri-La Golden Sands, Penang

Adventure Zone at Shangri-La Golden Sands is an exhilarating indoor playground designed to provide endless fun for kids of all ages.

The air-conditioned facility features three categories of exciting drop slides, including a thrilling 7.3-meter (23.95-ft) vertical drop slide, as well as a huge soft play area and an arcade that kept our boys entertained for hours.

The dedicated toddler zone offers a safe and engaging space for younger children, ensuring that even the littlest adventurers can enjoy the fun.

Adventure Zone was just a five-minute buggy ride from where we stayed–– Shangri-La Rasa Sayang, Penang, so it was incredibly convenient for us to visit.

We made great use of the play area, especially when we wanted to relax while still ensuring our sons could burn off some energy during the day.

We also appreciated the well-thought-out amenities, including a snack counter, retail area, and child-friendly restrooms, which made it easy to spend hours at Adventure Zone without worry.

Whether it was a quick visit in between activities or a longer session to let our kids have some active fun, this destination provided the perfect balance of excitement and peace of mind for us as parents.

The theme park features activities for all ages, with the Rainbow Skywalk being a highlight–– a thrilling glass-bottomed walkway on the 68th floor of KOMTAR Tower, offering stunning panoramic views of Penang.

For younger visitors, the Jurassic Research Centre brings dinosaurs to life with animatronics and interactive exhibits, while the Penang Boutique Aquarium provides an up-close experience with marine life.
