We loved the laid-back atmosphere, lush landscapes, and endless opportunities for adventure.
For us, Chiang Mai was all about hands-on experiences and outdoor fun.

From bathing elephants at an ethical sanctuary— a highlight for Jere, our three-year-old toddler— to climbing Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall, we spent our days making incredible memories together.
Exploring Chiang Dao Cave was another standout experience, as it felt like stepping into a hidden world beneath the mountains.
We also found plenty of ways to keep our kids entertained in the evenings, such as taking them to Chiang Mai Night Safari, which was a huge hit.
The places we visited in Chiang Mai felt a little spread out, so getting around took some planning, but every adventure was worth it.
Whether it was getting up close with animals, discovering hidden gems, or finding fun ways to keep our children engaged, Chiang Mai had something for all of us.

Things We Did in Chiang Mai
Elephant Jungle Sanctuary
Our visit to Elephant Jungle Sanctuary was one of the most memorable aspects of our Chiang Mai trip.
We wanted to visit a place where elephants were well-cared for and could roam freely, and this sanctuary seemed like the perfect choice.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this would be a special experience.
We spent time feeding, bathing, and playing with the elephants, and watching them interact in their natural environment.
It was incredible to see how calm and playful the elephants were up close, and Jere was absolutely fascinated by the sight!
Our time at the sanctuary was also a great learning opportunity, as we gained a deeper understanding of the differences between Asian and African elephants, and the importance of elephant conservation.
To top it all off, we got to experience bamboo rafting, a fun and exciting ride that we all loved.
Floating down the river was a great way to soak in the scenery and added an extra adventure to an already unforgettable day.
The sanctuary provided transportation and lunch, making our visit an easy day trip, but it was a two-hour drive each way from the city centre.
Pro Tip: Bring entertainment for the kids to keep them occupied on the journey.

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary boasts a riverside setting in the mountainous terrain of northern Thailand, approximately 60 km (37.28 mi) from the city centre.
Chiang Dao Cave
Hidden beneath Doi Chiang Dao, Thailand’s third-highest mountain, Chiang Dao Cave is a vast limestone cave system filled with towering stalactites, winding tunnels, and hidden chambers.
The cave stretches over 12 km (7.46 mi), though only a few sections are open to visitors.
Upon arrival, we had a choice— take the easy, well-lit path or go for the pitch-black, more challenging route that required a guide.
Naturally, we chose adventure!
Armed with just a small lantern carried by our guide, we stepped into complete darkness, navigating narrow tunnels and jagged rocks, and even crawling through tight spaces.
Jere truly loved the experience, wriggling through the tunnels with excitement, treating it like a giant obstacle course.
It was incredible to see how one small lamp could light our way, revealing breathtaking rock formations and even a few bats hanging above us.
The journey took about 45 minutes, and by the time we emerged back into daylight, we felt a huge sense of accomplishment.
It was a reminder that the best adventures come from stepping into the unknown, and this was one we won’t forget.

Chiang Mai Night Safari
With Jere’s love for animals, visiting Chiang Mai Night Safari was an easy decision— we knew he’d absolutely love it!
From the moment we arrived, there was so much to see and do.
The excitement kicked in as we boarded the open-air trams, which took us through the different safari zones, bringing us up close to the animals in a way that felt completely different from a typical zoo.
Jere was wide-eyed with excitement as we spotted giraffes, zebras, and even predators like lions and tigers along the route.
But perhaps the most thrilling moment was when Jere got the chance to hold a snake around his neck for the first time!
Jere also held an iguana, and seeing his bravery and excitement was a proud parenting moment for us.
The interactive shows, especially the Tiger Show and Night Predators Show, were another highlight.
The shows were thrilling and educational, giving us fascinating insights into animal behaviour.
Further, the safari has walking trails, a playground, and opportunities to feed some of the animals, making it a well-rounded experience for families.
Chiang Mai Night Safari was the perfect mix of fun, adventure, and learning, and a great way to help little ones develop an appreciation for wildlife.

Chiang Mai Night Safari is nestled in the lush foothills of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, spanning the districts of Mae Hia, Nong Khwai, and Hang Dong, approximately 12 km (7.46 mi) southwest of Chiang Mai's old city centre.
Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall
As a family that loves taking on new challenges, climbing Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall was one of those moments that gave us a real sense of achievement.
It’s hard to believe that you can walk up a waterfall, but thanks to this mineral-rich limestone, the surface provides an incredible grip.
Despite its name, the waterfall doesn't actually feel sticky!
Jere loved testing his footing on the multi-tiered cascades, and we were all amazed at how easily we could climb against the flowing water without slipping.
The climb itself was about 100 m (≈ 328 feet) up, and while it looked daunting at first, the grip was so solid that even Jere took on the challenge with confidence.
We were especially proud to see how determined Jere was to reach the top.
With free admission, Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is a budget-friendly, unforgettable experience and a perfect place for families looking to turn a simple outing into a rewarding adventure.

Bua Tong Sticky Waterfall is nestled in the lush forests of Si Lanna National Park and easily accessible via Route 1001, approximately 60 km (37.28 mi) north of the city centre.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak at 2,565 m (≈ 8,415 ft) above sea level, was a must-visit for us.
As we drove up the mountain, we gradually felt the temperature drop, starkly contrasting with the warmth of Chiang Mai below.
By the time we reached the summit, the cool mountain air hit us, and we quickly realised just how cold it was.
So, if you're planning a visit, make sure to wrap up warm!
Our first stop was Wachirathan Falls, one of the park’s most impressive waterfalls.
The sheer power of the cascading water was mesmerising, and the cool mist was a welcome refresh after the drive.
Jere was fascinated by how loud and strong the waterfall was, and we all took a moment to soak in the beauty before continuing our journey.
Next, we explored the Ang Ka Luang Nature Trail, an easy, family-friendly trail winding through a mossy, almost mystical forest.
The fresh mountain air and peaceful surroundings made the trail a lovely spot to slow down and connect with nature.
Along the way, we spotted a few colourful birds, a reminder of Doi Inthanon National Park’s rich biodiversity.
Further up the mountain, we reached the Royal Twin Pagodas, an iconic landmark surrounded by immaculately kept gardens and sweeping valley views.
Our short climb to the pagodas was rewarded with stunning panoramic scenery, making it one of the most picturesque stops of the trip.
Finally, we reached the highest point in Thailand.
Standing at the summit, surrounded by crisp mountain air and breathtaking views, was a special moment. It was the perfect way to cap off an adventure-filled day, making the national park a must-visit for tourists who love nature, exploration, and a bit of a challenge.
