Kuala Lumpur might not be the first destination that comes to mind for a family trip, but after spending a week there with our three-year-old, Jere, and eight-month-old, Kay, we discovered some amazing family-friendly spots that deserve more attention.

Things We Did in Kuala Lumpur
Petronas Twin Towers
The Petronas Twin Towers, standing at 451.9 m (1,482.61 ft), are the world’s tallest twin towers and an iconic symbol of Kuala Lumpur.
Visiting the towers offers not just a chance to marvel at their architectural brilliance but also to enjoy breathtaking views of the city.
Jere was thrilled by the futuristic lift ride to the Skybridge on the 41st floor.
The Skybridge itself is a fascinating feature— not fixed to the towers but designed to allow slight movements from wind and structural shifts, ensuring its stability.
Standing on the bridge, you can even feel the gentle sway, which adds to the unique experience.
The Observation Deck on the 86th floor provides unparalleled panoramic views of the city, with the skyline rivalling that of Dubai.
The visit is highly systemised, with visitors grouped into small numbers for timed sessions.
We had around 10 minutes to soak in the views on the Skybridge, and about 20 minutes on the Observation Deck, which felt a bit rushed.
It’s worth planning ahead by reserving tickets online and arriving early to clear security checks smoothly.
The best time to visit is around sunset, so you can watch Kuala Lumpur transition from day to night from an excellent vantage point.
However, note that pushchairs aren’t allowed and must be left at the security desk.
If you’re visiting with younger children, consider bringing a carrier to make the experience more manageable.
Despite these minor logistical challenges, the Petronas Twin Towers gave us an unforgettable experience.

Petronas Towers serves as the crown jewel of the city skyline in the heart of the city, within the KLCC neighbourhood, next to Suria KLCC and KLCC Park.
Batu Caves
Batu Caves is a magnificent limestone hill featuring vibrant Hindu temples, crowned by the iconic golden statue of Lord Murugan and the famous 272 rainbow-coloured steps.
The experience was memorable for us, especially seeing Jere climb all 272 steps with his little legs, a feat we’ll always cherish.
Navigating the site with young children required some planning.
There was no designated area to leave a stroller, or at least we weren’t able to identify one.
Research suggested leaving a stroller at the bottom of the steps, hoping it would be there upon return, but we decided not to risk it.
Instead, we used a carrier for our youngest, while Jere managed the climb on his own.
The journey didn’t end when we got inside the caves.
More steps lead to the highest point within the Temple Cave, which impressed us with its vast space and sacred atmosphere.
Nearby, the Ramayana Cave captivated us with its colourful sculptures narrating epic tales, while the Dark Cave offered educational tours showcasing unique wildlife, ideal for older kids.
The area is also home to playful monkeys, which were fascinating to watch but required vigilance to ensure our children didn’t get too close.
Despite the challenging logistics, the caves provided a perfect blend of cultural discovery and adventure, leaving us with unforgettable memories as a family.
Important Reminder: Ensure you wear appropriate attire, covering your shoulders and knees, when visiting religious sites like Batu Caves, to show respect.

Batu Caves is in Gombak, Selangor, just 13 km (8.08 mi) north of Kuala Lumpur.
Aquaria KLCC
If your kids are like Jere who loves animals and sea creatures, Aquaria KLCC is a must-visit.
This world-class oceanarium, considered one of the best aquariums in Asia, features over 5,000 land and aquatic creatures.
The highlight is the 90-m (295.28-ft) underwater tunnel, where sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles swim right over your head— Jere couldn’t get enough!
Jere especially loved the feeding sessions, where he saw the sea creatures up close during their mealtime.
Don’t miss the hands-on experience in the Gene Pool, where kids can interact with starfish and more.
If you have kids aged 5 and above, consider the “Sleep with Sharks” overnight adventure for a truly unforgettable experience!
With interactive touch pools, exciting feeding sessions, and a cool, air-conditioned escape from the tropical heat, Aquaria KLCC is definitely, perfect for families.
Pro Tip: Arrive early or book tickets online to avoid long lines, especially on weekends.

Aquaria KLCC is in the "Golden Triangle”, Kuala Lumpur’s main shopping and entertainment hub, just a 10- to 15-minute walk from the KLCC Light Rail Transit (LRT) station via an underground pedestrian tunnel connected to Suria KLCC.

Suria KLCC, one of the premier shopping malls in Kuala Lumpur, offers a perfect blend of retail therapy and family-friendly attractions, including Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, and Aquaria KLCC.
Visiting this mall gives you a complete day out with its cinema, play area, and direct access to KLCC Park, featuring a children's playground, wading pool, and the mesmerizing Lake Symphony fountain show.

Suria KLCC is at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers in central Kuala Lumpur.
Pavilion Kuala Lumpur
This premier shopping destination features a wide range of international brands, a cinema, and family-friendly dining options.
Kids can enjoy activities like roller skating at Rollerwa+, watch movies at GSC cinema, or participate in exclusive Pavilion Privileges Kids Club events.

This mall is in the Bukit Bintang district, a vibrant shopping and entertainment hub.
LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre

The Exchange TRX
The Exchange TRX boasts a stunning 4.05-ha (10-ac) rooftop park with Play City, Play Cave, and Central Waterplay areas designed for children of all ages.
The park's biodiversity, interactive water features, and unique play structures inspired by Malaysian landscapes will surely appeal to families.

The Exchange TRX sits in the city’s new international financial district, easily accessible via public transportation, with a direct connection to the Tun Razak Exchange MRT Station and situated near major highways.
KLCC Park
KLCC Park is an urban oasis where we took Jere to burn off some energy on our rest days.
Whether Jere’s kicking a football, splashing in the wading pool, or enjoying the playground, the park offers endless fun.
We always brought swimwear and towels to help Jere cool down in the wading pool on hot afternoons.
We planned our visits around the Lake Symphony fountain shows at midday or in the evening for a colourful visual treat.
The jogging track is great for active families.
In our case, we often finished the day with a picnic in the green spaces, taking in the stunning views of the Petronas Towers.
Location of KLCC Park
KLCC Park is centrally located in Kuala Lumpur, at the base of the Petronas Towers, serving as a lush green oasis amidst the urban landscape.
Berjaya Times Square Theme Park
We had an amazing time at Berjaya Times Square Theme Park, Malaysia's largest indoor theme park.
With two sections, Galaxy Station for thrill-seekers and Fantasy Garden for younger kids, the park offered something for all of us.
Jere loved the Fantasy Train, Bumper Cars, and Flying Bumble Bee rides!
Meanwhile, thrill-seekers would enjoy the Supersonic Odyssey, Asia’s longest indoor roller coaster.
The air-conditioned indoor setting was perfect for escaping the heat, and we found it ideal to go here during the hottest part of the day.
To get the most out of your visit, we recommend purchasing combo tickets for both sections and checking ride height requirements in advance, especially for Galaxy Station.
Pro Tip: Starting with the Fantasy Garden helped keep Jere entertained with its gentle rides before exploring more theme park sections.
Location of Berjaya Times Square Theme Park
Berjaya Times Square Theme Park is located on the 5th and 7th floors of the massive Berjaya Times Square shopping complex in Bukit Bintang.
Jalan Alor
Jalan Alor is Kuala Lumpur's vibrant food street, offering a diverse array of Malaysian and international cuisines at affordable prices.
The 500-m (1,640.42-ft) stretch comes alive at night with colourful lights, bustling crowds, and enticing aromas from over 200 food stalls and restaurants.
We enjoyed a wide variety of dishes, including satay, dim sum, and local delicacies, in a lively and authentic atmosphere.
The street is stroller-friendly and safe for children, with many restaurants offering kid-friendly options.
Nevertheless, we still exercised basic precautions, such as keeping an eye on our belongings and holding on to our children amid the crowds.
Jalan Alor gave us a unique taste of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysian culture, thanks to its energetic ambience and delicious street food.

Jalan Alor is conveniently located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Bintang district, just a short walk from major shopping malls and easily accessible via public transportation.
Things We Considered Doing in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur Tower or KL Tower
KL Tower, standing 421 m (1,381.23 ft) tall, is one of Malaysia’s most iconic landmarks, offering breathtaking city views.
You can visit the Sky Deck for panoramic vistas or the Observation Deck for a more enclosed experience.
The tower also features attractions like the thrilling Sky Box with its glass floor, a mini zoo, and Atmosphere 360, a revolving restaurant offering panoramic dining, making it a memorable experience for all ages.
The surrounding Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve adds a touch of nature, allowing you to enjoy a short canopy walk before or after visiting the tower.
Elevators make the experience accessible for strollers, though carrying young kids in arms may be easier during peak times.

KL Tower is centrally located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, within the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve.

Zoo Negara or National Zoo of Malaysia
Animal-loving kids will surely be in their element at Zoo Negara, home to over 5,000 animals from 476 species spread across 110 ac (44.52 ha).
The zoo’s open-concept design allows you to see animals in their naturalistic habitats, nurturing your love for wildlife.
Young visitors will appreciate Children’s World, where they can pet and interact with gentle creatures up close.
The Giant Panda Conservation Centre and the majestic Malaysian Elephants Exhibit will also fascinate kids.
It’s best to time your visit around the animal shows and feeding sessions, with the Multi-Animal Show being a huge hit.
Arriving early is key, as the animals are more active in the cooler morning hours.
The mini-train is a lifesaver for covering the large grounds, especially when little legs get tired.

Petrosains, The Discovery Centre
We didn’t have enough time to fit in a visit to Petrosains, The Discovery Centre, but it seemed fun for the kids.
With over 6,503.21 sq m (70,000 sq ft) of interactive exhibits across 11 themed zones, this attraction is a perfect mix of education and entertainment.
As parents of a toddler, we loved the look of activities like Formula 1 simulators, dinosaur exhibits, and the TotSpot for younger kids.
Meanwhile, older children can enjoy space exploration simulations and robotics workshops.
To get the most out of a visit, plan for about three to four hours to explore fully, and check out their event calendar for live demos or presentations that might enhance the experience.
Location of Petrosains, The Discovery Centre
Petrosains, The Discovery Centre is located on Level 4 of Suria KLCC, easily accessible via the Centre Court glass lift at the base of the Petronas Twin Towers.
District 21 Kuala Lumpur
We would have loved to visit District 21 Kuala Lumpur, but Jere and Kay are still a bit too young for it.
However, if you have older kids, this 6,503.21-sq-m (70,000-sq-ft) indoor adventure park is a fantastic choice.
With trampolines, rope courses, climbing walls, and a ninja warrior obstacle course, this indoor park is perfect for active, thrill-seeking kids.
District 21 Kuala Lumpur is a great place for building confidence and staying fit, all in a fun, post-apocalyptic-themed setting.
The air-conditioned environment also makes this attraction an ideal escape from Kuala Lumpur’s heat.
Dress in comfortable, athletic clothing with sports shoes, as they’re required for most activities.

Pro Tip: Check height requirements and age restrictions before your visit to ensure your kids can participate, and visit on weekdays when it’s less crowded.

District 21 is located within IOI City Mall in Putrajaya, just a short drive from Kuala Lumpur’s bustling centre, offering easy access as part of a larger shopping and entertainment complex.
